Mena, named in honor of Folmina
Margaretha Janssen De Goeijen population 5,637 (2000 census), was incorporated in 1896 and can be considered the "heart” and “pride” of the Ouachita (Wash-i-taw) Mountains.
The Ouachita Mountains are the only mountains in the Western hemisphere which run East and West and encompass one of the most colorful, scenic areas in the United states, with mountain peaks ranging up to
2,861 feet above sea level.
Thirteen miles northwest of Mena is Queen Wilhelmina State Park adjacent to a
state and national scenic highway (Talimena Scenic Drive) which spans the mountain range from Arkansas to Oklahoma. Wilhelmina Inn, “Castle in the Sky” is an edifice for Queen Wilhelmina of Holland first built in 1898 and welcomes thousands of visitors each year to the park.
Anyone visiting Mena soon finds the area to be one of the most friendly, picturesque, serene, aesthetically beautiful places in the world
